GO WEST - Doncaster Diamond Live Lounge
Go West - Live Feb 20th 2015 - Doncaster Diamond Live Lounge
Back in the 80s the in place to be in Doncaster on a night out was Camelots, Thursday/Friday/Saturday and Sunday nights this was the place to be, Music was essential to the pubs popularity , Camelots was on old church that had been restored into a quirky venue, the resident Dj was very popular for the pranks
he played on the punters and the upto date tunes of the 80s he mixed . The pub was also kitted out with lots of tv video screens which was very modern for the day , They streamed endless music videos from the new channel of the time MTV and i guess this is where i probably first saw the video to a song called (WE CLOSE OUR EYES) a guy in a scruffy vest and jeans weilding about a huge monkey wrench and another guy gazing around
smartly dressed looking pretty cool for the era . The song , the video, captivated me the upbeat fresh sound and punty chorus had me hooked. Camelots introduced me to GO WEST, and later that year i made it a MUST to see the band play live in Sheffield .Thirty years on and i have to admit probably 30 to 40 gigs later GO WEST played live in what was Camelots but is now a new venue for live music called the Diamond Live Lounge .
Peter Cox and Richard Drummie formed Go West at the beginning of the 80s recording 2 songs with help from Mangaer John Glover , WE CLOSE OUR EYES and CALL ME brought instant interest from Chrysalis records and in 1985 WCOE was released and made it to number 5 in the top 40 singles chart , Later that year they released thier first album which also featured hits such as Dont look down and Goodbye Girl. In 1986 the band recieved a BRIT award for best Newcomers.1990 saw the release of King of wishful thinking which was featured in the film Pretty Woman and gained the band huge USA recognition and gained an ASCAP award for one of the most played songs during that year. One way street was another song to feature on a major movie soundtrack Rocky IV as the band continued to have success in the USA with Faithful also hitting the top 20.

Go West took to the stage in Doncaster after 2 local bands had supported them giving proceeds from their sales of tickets to local charities GINGER TOM and WHITE VALENTINE had already got the 400 strong crowd ready for a memorable night. 400 might not sound alot but believe me the venue was full and more suprisingly full of mixed ages which was great to see , Hen parties were there and also Birthday parties ,people i spoke to in the queue had come from Stockport / Coventry / Birmingham to name a few.Go West fans of old and new had travelled to see them play in this unique compact venue.Openeing the 1 and half hour set the band jumped straight into CALL ME which got the eagerly waiting audience straight into the mood. I was lucky enough to once again Photograph the Band with thanks going out to Mark , Dominic ,Andy from the venue and also to Deeral lead guitarist from the band for all their help.
Despite problems in the first 3 songs with Monitors and also Pete's mic the band continued and with a few tweaks from the sound engineer were soon sounding just as if you had put on the Juke box but had it turned up to beyond MAX. One thing i have to say about my love for this band is that they sound absolutley incredible every single time ive heard them, they are so spot on musically and vocally. After the usual 3 songs in the pit photographing it was time to relax grab a beer and join the crowd to watch the rest of the show. My apologies go out to those stood around me as my vocals im afraid are nowhere near the quality of Mr Cox, however i thourghly enjoyed singing along as did the whole of the Diamond Lounge when Mr Drummie asked for their help in the Key of ( c ) to join in with Finale song KING OF WISHFUL THINKING ,To which they showed their appreciation of the crowd participation. Sadly the night went way too quick after hearing a setlist full of old hits and also new releases. Accompanied by great covers of songs such as BLACK AND GOLD , SEX IS ON FIRE , READY TO GO and TRACKS OF MY TEARS the night the gig came to an end. However after 10 minutes or so Peter Cox reappeared and casually took time to walk amongst the waiting fans chatting and signing autographs aswell as posing for selfies. Richard wasnt too far behind him working the floor too , It amazes me how they actually remember faces and always stop to say thank you for coming and hope we see you at the next show ( TOP BLOKES ) I was lucky enough to have a little conversation with DEERAL who by the way is 1 hell of a guitarist . And through the powers of Social media i was amazed that he had actually seen my photography work and spent time to discuss different aspects of processing images. This was a really great night for me Go West playing in my home town and i took full advantage, needless to say a taxi was called for at the end of a great evening ;)
